Restore dull, blind headlights
“Easy Repair” for dull headlights. Save up to € 2,000.- by doing it yourself
Stone chip, UV-light, salt, insects and weather influences scratch plastic covers on modern headlights and make them dull. Bad light increases the risk of accidents significantly, doesn’t look nice and the dull lens won’t pass the tests of the Technical Inspection Agency (in Austria: TÜV).
As the headlights of nearly all modern vehicles are either bonded or produced in one piece, the covers can not be changed. New headlights may be really expensive, especially xenon or dynamic cornering lights cost up until € 1,000.- In addition to that you pay installation and adjustment works. dasAuto Easy Repair has developed a new way to repair dull headlights, without technical knowledge, cost-efficient and without much effort.
Experts: Protect everything around the headlight with masking tape. Sand the headlights with wet sandpaper P800 and after that with P2000. Clean it thoroughly with silicone remover , apply synthetic primer, let it dry for 10 minutes and paint it with 2K-clear lacquer.
Beginners: First, protect all of the adjacent parts with masking tape, so the paint can not be damaged while you sand. Therefore, mask all of the painted parts carefully with masking tape.
Sand the dull protective layer of the headlights with a big sponge, a lot of water and wet sandpaper – grit P800. This happens very quickly, as the damaged layer goes off easily. Keep cleaning the area with a lot of water. You will get a perfectly clear headlight lens by sanding it with a lot of water and wet sandpaper, grit P2000. This is also done easily: sand the cover evenly with circular movements and light pressure.
Now you need to mask. Masking is worth it, because it is a lot more work to remove the paint afterwards from bumper, mudguards, radiator grille and engine compartment than putting on masking tape now. Thorough cleaning is necessary in order to remove grease and silicone as well as abrasive particles. A lint-free cloth and a special cleaning agent guarantee a surface free of streaks and residues. In the moist status the sanded lens already seems to be quite clear. But as soon as the cleaning agent has evaporated, the dull surface with the grinding scratches appears again.
The cover needs to be primed with a synthetic primer so the clear lacquer, that is applied later on, stays robust. This primer is important as it guarantees a stable adhesion of the clear lacquer on the plastic. A thin layer of primer is enough and should be dry after 10 minutes. After shaking the can, put on the Spraymaster which facilitates handling significantly. A better position of the handle gives you a feeling for amount and regularity.

We recommend a two-component clear lacquer that is considerably more durable than a one-component product. In this two-component clear lacquer the hardener is integrated in a separate cartridge in the spray can. In order to mix the hardener with the A-component turn the can upside down, put it on an even surface and remove the protective cap from the bottom of the can. Remove the metal ring from the protective cap and insert it in the pin. Pull out the pin from the bottom of the can up to the stop. After that, turn it a full 360° in order to open the cartridge completely and to release the hardener. Important: shake the can well for 3 minutes from the moment you hear the agitator ball touching the can. So, optimal mixing is ensured. Again use the Spraymaster, it facilitates the painting.
Spray on the first thin layer of lacquer with circular movements and let it dry for 4 to 5 minutes. Finally, spray on a second rich layer. ATTENION! Don’t apply too much lacquer in order to prevent the formation of droplets.
DONE!
The headlights are as new and pass every safety check. Perfect light, perfect appearance, you did it yourself and additionally saved a lot of money!
